PHINCA HAPA
Hapa was my white, mixed-breed rescue dog from a shelter in Hawaii. In Hawaiian, Hapa means “mixed blood.” Though he was meant to make the journey with me to Spain, he passed away just before my departure, leaving a hole in my heart.
In 2015, while exploring vineyards in the village of Elvillar, I stumbled upon a high-altitude parcel that immediately reflected Hapa back to me. Its gentle slope was planted with a mix of half red and half white grapes, rooted in chalky white soils. The vineyard’s unique blend of elements reminded me of Hapa’s mixed heritage, while also resonating with my deep appreciation for the seemingly lost tradition of crafting quality white wine in Rioja. I knew this vineyard had to be mine.
I withdrew my life savings and invested in this parcel, determined to rescue it from decades of harsh chemical farming. Biodynamically farmed and tended by plow horses, the vineyard reflects my deep respect for the land and the animals that inspire me. By nurturing this piece of nature, I sought to create something beautiful and enduring, just as Hapa had nurtured me.
In honor of (wo)man’s best friend—my loyal, loving Hapa—this vineyard and its wines celebrate the connection between care, companionship, and creativity. A reminder of how deeply love and respect for all living things can feed our souls.
