SASIKUME

In the old texts of Rioja, traces of Trousseau—also known as Bastardo—hint at a time when this grape could be found in the region. Inspired by a love of Jura wines and a desire to reconnect with the grape’s history in our region, we set out to reintroduce the variety to Rioja, specifically to the village of Elvillar.

Sasikume was born from an experimental vineyard designed to follow the natural contours of the land. Planted and tilled by plowhorse, we waited patiently for four years to see what this small, biodynamic parcel would yield. The result is a young, fresh wine with bright acidity, vibrant energy, and naturally low alcohol.

The name Sasikume means “bastard” in the Basque language of Euskera, a playful nod to the grape’s name in other parts of Spain. The label, featuring our whimsical chicken-goat hybrid, captures my love of animals and playful sense of humor, perfectly reflecting the imaginative spirit of this wine. Sasikume is meant to be enjoyed with a sense of fun, yet its complexity invites curiosity and celebrates life’s surprises.
